Announcing Tomoyasu Hotei at #AWAsia!

We’re thrilled to announce Tomoyasu Hotei as one of our featured speakers at #AWAsia this May!

Tomoyasu Hotei, known as HOTEI (“hoe-tay”) is an acclaimed Japanese guitarist, songwriter, producer, performer and entrepreneur, who currently resides in London. A genuine superstar in his native Japan where he has sold more than 40 million records, Hotei is best known internationally for ‘Battle Without Honor or Humanity’, made famous by its inclusion in Tarantino’s iconic Kill Bill movie and considered a gold standard in the sync world, where it has been used extensively by brands and sports.

Hotei began his career in 1981, as co-founder, guitarist and principal songwriter of legendary Japanese rock band BOØWY(“boy”), who enjoyed phenomenal success as one of Japan’s most popular and revered bands.

Hotei established himself as a solo artist in the late 80’s, after the break up of BOØWY. His debut solo album “GUITARHYTHM”(1988) was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London and its huge success was followed by a string of multi-million selling albums, each musically different to the last.

Hotei released his debut international album, “Strangers”, in 2015 through Spinefarm Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music. The album features an array of guests including Iggy Pop, Rammstein’s Richard Z. Kruspe, and Bullet For My Valentine’s lead singer Matt Tuck. Hotei toured in USA and Europe in 2016 and 2017 in support of the Strangers album, playing in many international cities for the first time. Hotei completed his third European headline tour in October 2018, including his second headline show at his favourite London venue Shepherds Bush Empire. Hotei finishes 2018 starting work on his next studio album, due for release in 2019, alongside a 19 date nationwide Japan tour, visiting some cities for the very first time.

Hotei has an ongoing relationship with some of the leading tech creatives in Japan, and is continuing to push forward with innovative concepts to further widen his reach. In 2018 alone this has included:

- Two major live streaming events recorded in London for leading Japanese telecoms provider NTT, which featured state of the art multi camera angle shoots which allowed phone app users the freedom to choose their camera view.

- An app which creates a 3D performing Hotei digital avatar when viewed through a phone camera, which is triggered by a special pattern on his guitar plectrum. Hotei underwent 3D mapping of his performance in a special 100 camera chamber so his movements could be exactly replicated by the avatar, to make it as lifelike as possible.

- A new single “202X” commissioned by leading Japanese anime brand, “Fist of the North Star”, who created a state of the art animated video for the song and pushed the song via its many channels.

Collaborations have featured extensively in Hotei’s career, with both brands and other artists, including David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop.
