#AWEurope Recap: View from the Top with Mark Read

At Advertising Week Europe this week, WPP CEO Mark Read spoke about his career to date and plans for the business in a wide-ranging interview with Kathleen Saxton, founder and CEO of The Lighthouse Company.

Read emphasised the importance of creativity to the future of WPP and suggested that the group’s agencies might receive greater financial freedom in the future. He also addressed the issues of keeping up with consumer adoption of new technologies and recruiting well-rounded staff who can take “a consultant-like approach to working with clients”.

During the session, Read also commented on WPP divesting its ownership of Kantar, stating that he believes that it’s the right way to strengthen the company’s position in the market.

Whilst in conversation with CNN’s Nina dos Santos and Anne Finucane from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Michael Roth argued that consumers and investors alike are seeking out businesses that “have values and stand for something”.

The Chairman and CEO of Interpublic Group spoke about his company’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal number six, clean water and sanitation, the vital role that corporate values play in developing relationships with consumers, and the importance of “purpose-driven advertising” when building a brand.
