Mukundi Lambani
Founder and Director
Ambani Africa
Education
I obtained my Master’s in Creative Media Leadership (Cum Laude) from Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom. I also hold a diploma in Business Management and Administration from Varsity College, a certificate in Intellectual Property Management from WITS, and an Honors de- gree in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA.
Film
I caught the producer bug in 2010 when I began producing the international 48 Hour Film Project. At only 23, I became the first African producer of the competition by buying the rights to produce the film festival in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Gaborone. The initiative created oppor- tunities for more than 200 emerging filmmakers, some of whom went on to Hollywood and the Cannes film festival as a result of my team’s fundraising efforts. I was previously selected as a board member for the Visual Arts Network of South Africa.
Business
I was the project manager of the ‘Creative Economies in Townships' project which supports creative entrepreneurs in Deipsloot, Alexandra, Ga-Rankuwa, and Eesterust. The work consisted of design- ing the progame, building partnershipsmanaging stakeholders and managing the budget. This project at the Goethe Institute provided training, market access, mentorship, travel exchange oppor- tunities, and paid job placements for Township-based entrepreneurs. And I am currently a business mentor with the Innovation Hub, guiding young entrepreneurs in various industries. I have worked as a tertiary lecturer in Media Business and Transmedia storytelling and Creative development.
Ambani
I now work as the founder and director of Ambani Africa, an Edtech company that makes early learning easier, by offering technology-enabled language content. The start-up teaches young learn- ers their mother tongue through gaming and augmented reality, an interactive experience of a real- world environment, making it a fun learning resource. The company’s investors include IDF Capital and E-Squared, a division of Alan Gray.
Ambani Africa was inspired by my Masters’ research and my own personal challenges with my lan- guage of Tshivenda. African languages are digitally under-represented and for young learners, find- ing content in your own language can be challenging. The foundation phase is particularly impor- tant because if you are behind by the time you are in Grade 3, you’re not likely to catch up. This is why Ambani focuses on mother-tongue education at this critical stage.
Ambani Africa has over 10 000 users and the company has won the Injini Audience Award, the TIA Swiss-South Africa program, the IDF Demo Day, and 4 awards at the 2021 MTN awards including the overall winner for App of the year. I was selected for the M&G 200 young South Africas in 2021. I was also one of the winners of the Irish Tech Challenge in 2022 and part of the Swisss- South Africa residency (SASBI) in Switzerland and Rwanda in 2022.
Personal
I spend most of my time in Limpopo, where I have ventured into a farming project with my brother. I love spending time with my family, particularly my 2-year-old nephew, who is a firm and trusted critic of Ambani.
